چکیده

Concerns about the possible ecotoxicological implications of nano-sized plastic materials in freshwater environment are growing with increasing use materials. The present study focuses on behavior and effects amidine-functionalized polystyrene (NPLs) 20, 40, 60, 100-nm-size freshwaters different synthetic media. Daphnia magna was exposed to concentrations from 0.5 30 mg/L (and 100 for 100-nm-sized NPLs). results revealed no significant aggregation ultra-pure water, culture media, water. In presence natural organic matter, NPLs 20 40 nm displayed better stability both whereas a 60 PS found. All studied size between exhibited acute toxicity D. magna. observed 48-h immobilization strongly depended primary NPLs, 40-nm-size inducing stronger effect Water quality variables such as pH, cation anion composition, DOC were secondary importance. confirmed sizes crustaceans media demonstrated importance NPLs.

A comparison between the effects of polylactic acid and polystyrene microplastics on Daphnia magna

The effects of microplastics on zooplankton are an increasing environmental concern. Both primary microplastics that are produced as constituents of cosmetic products, as well as secondary microplastics that are formed by degradation of larger plastic debris, are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. Today, primary microplastics are being phased out and replaced by plant-derived bioplastics. Whet...

Daphnia magna feeding on Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii: the role of food composition, filament length and body size

We investigated the role of filament length of the toxic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii on the grazing of Daphnia magna by providing different food mixtures. It was hypothesized that longer C. raciborskii filaments would reduce the clearance rates of D. magna more than shorter ones. Also, C. raciborskii was expected to have a stronger negative impact on the grazing of larger anim...

Benefits of haemoglobin in the cladoceran crustacean Daphnia magna.

To determine the contribution of haemoglobin (Hb) to the hypoxia-tolerance of Daphnia magna, we exposed Hb-poor and Hb-rich individuals (2.4-2.8 mm long) to a stepwise decrease in ambient oxygen partial pressure (P(O(2)amb)) over a period of 51 min from normoxia (20.56 kPa) to anoxia (<0.27 kPa) and looked for differences in their physiological performance. The haem-based concentrations of Hb i...

Low exposure concentration effects of methoprene on endocrine-regulated processes in the crustacean Daphnia magna.

Methoprene is a growth-regulating insecticide that manifests its toxicity to target organisms by acting as a juvenile hormone agonist. Methoprene similarly may exert toxicity to crustaceans by mimicking or interfering with methyl farnesoate, a crustacean juvenoid. We hypothesized that methoprene interferes with endocrine-regulated processes in crustaceans by several mechanisms involving agonism...

The dichotomous oxyregulatory behaviour of the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna.

The dual function of appendage movement (food acquisition, ventilation) proved to be the key to explaining the peculiar oxyregulatory repertoire of the planktonic filter feeder Daphnia magna. Short-term hypoxic exposure experiments with normoxia-acclimated animals under varying food concentrations revealed a dichotomous response pattern with a compensatory tachycardia under food-free conditions...
